The luckiest player in the V-League men’s division was Seoul Woori Card. Woori Card, which even replaced its coach, has strengthened its power through the Asia Quarter Draft and entered the new season.

Woori Card received the first overall pick and selected Iran’s outside hitter Ali Hagparast (20) at the 2024 Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) Men’s Asian Quarter Tryout held at the Jeju Sun Hotel on the 3rd.

The Asia Quarter, which was newly established last year, determined the order through a probability draw. Unlike the women’s division, which had a differential draw in reverse order of performance last season, the men’s division drew the same 10 marbles each.

Among them, they competed for the lead with Incheon Korean Air until the last minute in last season’s regular league, but ended up in second place with a one-point difference. In the playoffs, they were defeated by Ansan OK Financial Group and stayed in 3rd place.

After the season, Woori Card was busy. They gave up on renewing the contract with coach Shin Young-cheol, who led the team for six years, and appointed Brazilian coach Mauricio Paes. He is an experienced coach who won the Ukrainian league and served as coach of the Iranian national team.

Although Woori Card is preparing for the new season without any major changes in the team, it boasts a powerful team centered around Kim Ji-han and Han Tae-jun, who are growing further through the effects and experience of the new coach. In addition, the recruitment of a 198cm outside heater with ample growth potential raises expectations for next season.

OK Financial Group also smiled. In the lottery competition, they received the second-place pick and selected China’s outside hitter Zhang Binglong (30). He is a 197cm outside heater.

KB Insurance in Uijeongbu, ranked 3rd, selected Australian outside heater Max Staples (30, 197cm), and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance in Daejeon, ranked 4th, selected Iranian aposite spiker Ali Fazli (27, 205cm). Cheonan Hyundai Capital, ranked 5th, selected Chinese outside heater Deng Xinfeng (23, 202 cm), and Incheon Korean Air, ranked 6th, selected Iranian aposite spiker Aref Moradi (26, 203 cm).

Suwon KEPCO, the last to receive the right to be nominated, chose Japanese setter Yamato Nakano (25·179cm). KEPCO, which had fun last year by appointing libero Ryohei Iga, took a different route from other teams that all chose wing attackers.

A total of 28 people participated in this Asia Quarter tryout, but unlike the women’s division, not a single player who played in last year’s V-League survived. Bayarsaihan (former OK Financial Group), Eddie (Mongolia, former Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance), Liu Hongmin (Taiwan, former KB Insurance), and Ryohei (Japan, former Korea Electric Power Corporation) packed their bags with regret.

In this Asian quarter, in which more diverse countries participated, three Iranian players, two Chinese players, and one player each from Japan and Australia were selected by each club.

Asian quarter players in the men’s division will receive $100,000 (about 136 million won) and $120,000 (about 163 million won) when their contracts are renewed.
