Coach Bell’s South Korean team is competing against Colombia, Morocco, and Germany for two tickets to the round of 16.
Colombia, our first opponent, is ranked 25th in the FIFA rankings, eight spots below us, but they are known for their physicality and aggressiveness, especially Myra Ramirez, a 178cm tall forward.
Coach Bell has been advocating a “high intensity” approach against the more physically gifted teams.
The idea is to overcome a physical disadvantage with stamina and sprinting.
In the exhibition game against Haiti, a fictionalized Colombia, they were outplayed by size and speed, but their pressing play came to life and they came from behind to win.
With Morocco, ranked 72nd in the FIFA rankings, in the second round, a win against Colombia is crucial to improve their chances of reaching the round of 16.
The national team had won their two exhibition games against Zambia in preparation for Morocco.
However, the Moroccans are no slouches either, having recently drawn against ‘powerhouse’ Italy.
Our final group opponent, Germany, is ranked second in the FIFA rankings and has an average height of 172 centimeters, so they’re ahead of us in every way.
However, the team is confident that they can pull off an upset, saying, “I think we are well prepared in terms of physical, technical, and tactical aspects.”
