All six casino concessioners in Macau are making progress so far in delivering on their various concession-related spending pledges, as agreed with the Macau government.
Hoshi casino director Adriano Marquez said he was the director of the Game Inspection and Coordination Bureau, the city’s casino regulator, as part of a written response to an investigation filed in early November by local lawmaker Leung Sun Yiok.
Leung asked specifically what performance indicators the government used to determine the implementation of pledges by the concessors, particularly social responsibility. Ho’s response, released on Sunday, did not summarize information on that.
However, the gaming director said: “Regular checks have found that casino concessioners have all made progress in implementing various promised investments under their respective [government-approved] investment enforcement plans.”
Mr Ho also said he had fulfilled his corporate social responsibilities under concession bids and contracts.
He said: “They also carried out their responsibilities in terms of securing [benefits] for staff, education and training, employment of people with disabilities and those undergoing [physical] rehabilitation, support for diversification of local small businesses and local industries, charities, scientific research, green initiatives, cultural and sporting events and volunteer services.”
For 10 years of their current concession period, each of which began in January – by September 30 each year, Macau concessioners must submit their respective investment enforcement proposals to local governments for approval for the next calendar year.
Concessors are also required by March 31 each year to provide authorities with their own reports on how casino operators have undertaken investments promised in the previous calendar year as part of an “evaluation mechanism.”
Mr. Ho, the regulator, also noted that the city’s labor secretariat will monitor the employment status of employees in the casino industry, and monitor the size of the sector’s workforce.
