Macau’s government tourism agency (MGTO) on Tuesday cited provisional figures, saying a total of nearly 16.73 million visitors came in the first half of 2024, about 82.5% of the same period in 2019. The overall figure represents an average of 91,918 arrivals per day during the reporting period.
MGTO said visitor arrivals tallied for January-June rose 43.6% year-on-year.
Macau recorded more than 20.28 million visitor arrivals in the first half of 2019, the trading year just before the start of COVID-19, according to data from the Macau Bureau of Statistics. In 2019, visitor arrivals from Macau were tallied at 39.4 million.
Provisional visitor numbers released by MGTO on Tuesday showed Macau had about 2.56 million visitors in June, as 14.17 million had already arrived in the first five months of 2024.
Tuesday’s update did not include an analysis of each source market for inbound visitors. However, the data mentions that Macau saw nearly 1.17 million international visitors in the six months to June 30, up 146.4% year-on-year. Overseas visitors accounted for 7.0% of total arrivals in the first half of 2024.
Macau tourism officials have mentioned several times that they have targeted 2 million foreign tourists this year.
Official data sets for visitor arrivals in June will be released by the Census Service later this week.
